Since this is my first post, I figured a review on a film that revolves around birds would be fitting!

Logline on IMDb: During World War I in 1918, a pigeon and his friends spring into action.

Originally produced in Spain but rerecorded with English voice actors.

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family

Age Range: 3-13

Animation: A+. The animation style is very familiar to those who have a familiarity with Disney animation. Many of the animals almost exactly resemble Disney cartoon characters. There is a mix of traditional cartoon animation and computer generated images that add a great deal of depth to the scenes.

The scenes are richly decorated and loaded with details that transport you back in time to really step into the farm that the film revolves around.

There are a few moments where they infused dialogue or imagery with things that only adults would catch (a sassy pigeon swishes her hips and tail as she walks away... a brutal attack scene is artistically shot to avoid showing too much violence... war scenes are glanced over...) It's all tastefully done and gives adults things to catch on to as well.

Dialogue: Since this a touchy time in our history, I think that the dialogue does a good job showing the danger of that time without being too dull or depressing. It shows the carrier pigeons volunteering to fight for their side and narrowly avoiding attack by the German "falcons".

There is a very motivational song that the mouse sings. He is determined to fly like all of his winged friends, and the theme carries throughout the film. Though the song sounds and feels very 80s, "Let's go and fight for survival, hey ho its up to you and me, oh no I will not surrender like that Cher Ami." It's very catchy and cute.

Reminds me of: Fievel films: "An American Tale" and "Fievel Goes West". In this case, a tiny sparrow is the same type of character that Fievel was.

My 3 year old boy likes it and watched it completely with me the first time.

Give it a try if it sounds like something you would like and let me know what you think!

This film can be currently found on Netflix.
