Logline from IMDb: When the farmer's away, all the animals play ... and sing, and dance. Eventually, though, someone has to step in and run things, a responsibility that ends up going to Otis, a carefree cow.
Genre: Action, Comedy, Family
Age Range: 6-13
My little guy (3) didn't really pay attention to this one.
Animation: B. I'm really not a huge fan of this style of animation. It just doesn't work for me.
There are a few aspects like the cell phones, a rap song sang by a rat (Even though the song is one of my husbands classic, go to, sing alongs) that really date this film.
The storm scene where we first meet the antagonistic coyote pack was really the highlight of the visual aspects of this film for me.
The most entertaining piece was "The Barnyard Boys" and their interesting music. There was also a "Mechanical Man Ride" and a "KFC dart board" that made me literally laugh out loud.
The most WTF moment was the "Wild Mike" portion. I am still wondering what that was...
My biggest issue with this film is the fact that the male cows, or bulls, have udders! I mean, they even comment on them being filled with milk at one point. We could maybe venture into territory that states maybe he is a transgender cow that really relates more to the bulls... but almost all of the bulls have udders and no horns. Don't worry though, there are actual horned and udderless bulls in the film, briefly, but none of the main characters.
Also, this isn't as big of an issue, but they take the time to show a boy tipping over a sleeping cow/bull and according to my research, that isn't possible. Perhaps some farm folks can let me know about this?
Dialogue: The dialogue is incredibly entertaining and even amusing. There were several adult moments that always make childrens films more entertaining for us grown people.
Not much to say here. Dialogue was well done.
Reminds me of: "The Lion King". Otis- main cow/bull is Simba, Ben- Daddy cow/bull is Mufasa, and Dag- the Coyote Leader is Scar. If you watch this film... let me know if you see this similarity too!
To solidify this concept... the scene before the final weird scene (with the neighbor woman and Wild Mike) is of Otis looking at the stars as three cow shaped forms dance... made of stars. I know it's not exact... but I can't help but think of Mufasa's cloud appearance to Simba.
Give it a try if this sounds like something you might like and please let me know what YOU think!
This film can be currently found on Netflix.
